THIS SAYS IT ALL
Take Down the Bird Feeder
(picture of Maxine)
The analogy is absolutely right on...
Maxine tells it like it is!
I bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with seed. What a beauty of a bird feeder it is, as I filled it lovingly with seed.
Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food. But then the birds started building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, and next to the barbecue.
Then came the poop. It was everywhere: on the patio tile, the chairs, the table, everywhere! Then some of the birds turned mean. They would dive bomb me and try to peck me even though I had fed them out of my own pocket. And others birds were boisterous and loud. They sat on the feeder and squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and night and demanded that I fill it when it got low on food.
After a while, I couldn't even sit on my own back porch anymore. So I took down the bird feeder and in three days the birds were gone. I cleaned up their mess and took down the many nests they had built all over the patio.
Soon, the back yard was like it used to be.... quiet, serene and no one demanding their rights to a free meal.
Now let's see. Our government gives out free food, subsidized housing, free medical care, and free education and allows anyone born here to be an automatic citizen.
Then the illegals came by the tens of thousands.
Suddenly our taxes went up to pay for free services; small apartments are housing 5 families; you have to wait 6 hours to be seen by an emergency room doctor; your child's 2nd grade class is behind other schools because over half the class doesn't speak English.
Corn Flakes now come in a bilingual box; I have to 'press one' to hear my bank talk to me in English, and people waving flags other than 'Old Glory' are squawking and screaming in the streets, demanding more rights and free liberties.
Just my opinion, but maybe it's time for the government to take down the bird feeder. If you agree, pass it on; if not, continue cleaning up the poop.

I think the end of that story is awful.
I can understand being upset about a lot of the issues, but that is more of a government issue than a people issue. I'm pretty sure if you were born in a worse off country you'd want to go where you could make a better life for yourself and your family. I realize that there are a lot of illegals and immigrants abusing the system but there are plenty of nationals doing the same thing. It's sad that people want to basically segregate because of bad governing. I guess you should just count yourself lucky to be born where you were and turn your head to those not so fortunate.
I seriously feel ill now.
I know. It really is sick. I couldn't believe that someone would forward that to everyone in the office thinking it was cute. It's racist. And I really think it's against everything that makes America America. I don't condone hand-outs, but I can't condone that small-minded, racist, culturally-challenged mentality.
I'm torn on the issue. I really am.
In Juneau, Alaska, the bald eagles are plentiful. What majestic and beautiful birds, right? People in Juneau can't stand them though because they're essentially scavengers. They hang out at the dump, get in people's garbage, make messes, etc.
Is it the eagles' fault that the garbage is so easy to get to?
I'd say the analogy is better suited to the eagles - we make the wrong kind of food available or leave our garbage around, and people who would normally take care of themselves now scavenge because it's just too easy. Which is worse? Can we actually blame the eagles? I don't think we can. It's our freaking garbage!
I have a massive tree in my front yard. The birds love it and so do I. It also hangs right over my driveway so if I park my car there, it gets pooped on. It's annoying and husband wants to cut the tree down. The same tree that looks great and provides awesome shade from the western sun. So know what I did? I cleaned out my carport so I could park my car there. Now I have my tree AND a clean car and the birds don't really bother me.
I love allegories.
ugh-someone at work sent that out? gross.
I hope that you send a link to this blog entry back to the jackass who sent you the forward.
I'm seriously still so angry about this email, even this morning. I thought about it all night long.
Do people honestly not realize that it's the leaders of the country that legal citizens voted for that put these handouts into place?
I think of Canada, very much a melting pot. We let all sorts of people immigrate here. It's probably a lot easier to get in here than the US. Do we have a huge problem with illegals? No. Do we give handouts to illegals? No. And I really don't think that our lack of illegals is due to having another strong country bordering us.
I think the people that come here want to come for a better opportunity and our government makes that possible. I won't sugar coat it, we have all sorts of programs for new immigrants which are almost handouts. (Which most citizens don't even know about.) It is seriously a leg up for them, things that you would never be offered if you were born here. Does that bother me? Yeah, a little bit. But I think you have to also think about all the economic progress that comes as a result of those types of things.
Imagine if they sent out buses and picked up every illegal in the US and dropped them back off across the border. What do you think would happen then? I don't think it would be anywhere near as great as people who think that note was cute think it would be. Not even close.
Perhaps instead of sending stupid forwards they should spend time lobbying to have programs for health care and such put in place for the working, tax paying people instead of being racist assholes.
But what do I know...
Oh yeah, and another thing! Maybe all the "wealthy" Americans, Europeans, Canadians, Asians, should stop going to poorer countries and buying up their land for development making even living in poverty unaffordable for those people so that they don't have to cross the border to "your country."
I didn't send the person a link. What I did send was an email requesting that they not send me derogatory emails about people who come to our country for a better life. I also mentioned that many of these people might be our family members, friends and/or co-workers. Of course I was thinking personally about my husband who initially came here legally but then dropped out of school and became undocumented for a time and therefore not legal. So I, of course, was pretty much shocked when I read this. We also work with several people who do not speak English as a first language. I don't get offended easily, but I was embarrassed that she would send this out because of the ignorant attitude it perpetuated. I wondered if she even read it. I was even more shocked that more of my co-workers either found it "harmless" or agreed with it. As one put it, "I laughed! I HATE pushing 1 for English!" WTF?
That's a good point. I wonder if she did read it? Maybe she did but didn't understand what it was saying because her second grade class was so far behind?
I can't believe that so many of your coworkers felt that way. That's a real eye opener.
I'm curious now. Did she respond to your email?
PS. Good for you for saying something. Too many people just let ignore it. And if you ask me ignorance is acceptance.
